Preschool Lesson Plan: Picnic Theme

* Background: We are all going through some chaotic and concerning times at the moment. On Friday, March 13, 2020, our family began our process of social distancing and staying put in our homes. That means we found ourselves with two preschool-aged children at home. I took it upon myself to continue their preschool education while we find ourselves coping with this change in our daily norm. Disclaimer: While I have Masters in Business Administration and Bachelors in Psychology, I do not have any teaching experience.

Today’s theme was all about picnics.

Pretend Play

I collected all of the children’s play food and used two containers that we had to serve as picnic baskets. The children took turns deciding what they wanted to take with them on their picnic.

Pretend picnic time

After they filled their picnic baskets, we walked around the house looking for a picnic spot and then returned to the living room and set down a sheet as our picnic blanket. Then we had a pretend picnic.

At lunch, we had an indoor picnic in the living room too! The kids loved eating picnic-style today!

Project: Thumb print ants going on a picnic

Materials needed: picnic basket printable, stamp pads, pen, crayons

I helped the kids make their thumb print ants and then drew faces and legs on the ants. Then I had the kids color the picnic basket if they felt like it.

For science, we learned about ants!

Music and Movement

For music and movement, we listened and grooved to some picnic themed songs.

Five Hungry Ants – The Kiboomers
Teddy Bear Picnic – The Kiboomers
We’re Going on a Picnic! – Maple Leaf Learning

For sensory time, we played with kinetic sand. Since we live in San Diego, picnics are often had at the beach.

Our local libraries are closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and we only have so many books at home, so I have found read aloud videos on YouTube to be really helpful.

Our three picnic-themed books for today were:

The Teddy Bears’ Picnic by Jimmy Kennedy
A Perfect Picnic by Sarah Albee
Freda Plans a Picnic by by Stuart J. Murphy
